Beat to Quarters has an active community of around 20 players, which has recently celebrated one year of activity. We're pretty laid back, with players posting anywhere from a couple times a day to a couple times a week, depending on individual schedules and preferences. It is a historical site focused on countering the last pirates in the West Indies. It gives a great deal of attention to historical accuracy, but it is not what one would expect to find on a traditional “pirate site”.
Set in 1741, we have pirates, civilians and military forces, from the disciplined British Royal Navy to the high society of Barbados to the whorehouses of Hispaniola. We aren't based on any fandom, but are rather anchored more in nautical history and the spirit of the Age of Sail.
To give you a taste of what's going on, we currently have a few ongoing mysteries, including the murder of a Captain, the disappearance of a wealthy Englishwoman, a vicious attack on a Royal Marine, a quest for a Spanish galleon. From naval battles to romance, balls, tavern fights and everyday work, we have everything one might want. We're far more interested in story-telling, action and intrigue, so relationships (while present) don't get the spotlight.
We're an all-original board, with all-original characters and no word count. Quality writing and research figure in greatly, and the plot is largely player-driven: this means *anyone* can jump in and make their mark on the direction of the story. Nothing is set in stone, and the power is with the players.
All players can have their go at influencing events with our player-driven plot structure. We encourage players to cook up plots and story lines, and not to be afraid of jumping in and directing the flow of the story with their character's actions. Come and make your mark on the Caribbean's history!
